Pāmu is the brand name for Landcorp Farming Limited, and Omamari Station is one of their farms in Dargaville, Northland. Omamari Station is a beef finishing operation managed by Brendon Egan.
Pāmu is a State-Owned Enterprise and the largest pastoral farmer in Aotearoa, managing nearly 360,000ha over more than 100 farms and providing jobs for 630 permanent staff. Over any 12 months, Pāmu is caring for 1.3 million sheep, deer, and cattle.
Omamari is a 1300-ha effective farm that has been split into a grid with grazing cells of between 0.7 to 1 ha, holding 25 bulls each. The intensive beef grazing system is home to about 2,500 bulls.
Conditions on the farm are typical of Northland’s dry but humid weather. Being coastal, it has the added challenges of exposure to sea-salt air. When it comes to durable equipment in this environment, Brendon says, “The sea salt rips our farm to bits, so we always have to keep that in mind when we use any fencing products.”
Brendon discovered Jolt’s galvanised gudgeons and has been pleased so far; he adds, “We were worried about sea salt causing rust, so that’s why we went for the galvanised gudgeons. They haven’t been in place for long, but already they’re doing their job well. My fencer really recommended them over what we get from other suppliers. Any nails, bugle head screws, or gudgeons our fencer suggests we buy galvanised to keep off the sea salt.”
“Galvanised” refers to the protective zinc coating applied to the gudgeons to prevent rust and corrosion, making them ideal for outdoor use in farming environments. Jolt gudgeons are hot-dipped, and this galvanisation process is critical in areas with high moisture, such as coastal farms, as it increases the product’s durability and longevity when exposed to the elements, including salt air.
Using galvanised gudgeons in farm fencing ensures that gates remain functional over time and resist the wear and tear caused by harsh weather conditions, ultimately maintaining the integrity of the fencing system.
Brendon has dealt with FarmShop and the Jolt team since 2016 ordering a large quantity of gates swung or hung with Jolt gudgeons. He used to call on Leanne when FarmShop was in Dargaville to grab supplies. But now he’s happy to call through for his orders, and he plans to continue using the Jolt products well into the future.
Thanks for the testimonial Brendon – we’re sure the gudgeons will handle the thrashing that farming in Northland is known to bring, and we look forward to supporting your fencing efforts!
